Registration process and visa extension in Germany

In Germany, the local residents' registration office is called "Bürgerservice" or "Bürgeramt." In some cities, you'll be offered a small gift, like money, gift cards, or vouchers, if you choose that city as your main residence (Hauptwohnsitz). Let's now go into the details of the procedures and next steps.

Registration at the Local Residents' Registration Office

Usually, registration is done at the Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt. Type "Einwohnermeldeamt + the name of the city" into Google and you'll find the office's address in that city. Note: for large, densely populated cities like Hamburg, you need to make an appointment before going to the registration office.

The required documents are as follows:

• The rental contract
• Your passport (with visa attached)
• The registration form

But if you move to another city, you need to re-register (Ummelden) in the new city within 2 weeks. After your registration, you'll receive a confirmation — Meldebestätigung — which you can use to extend your visa.

You should make an appointment as early as possible because they're often fully booked for 2 weeks! But if you can't get an appointment before the registration deadline, don't worry! You can still make an appointment online. After that, you'll receive an email from the registration office. This email can serve as temporary proof in case you can't register your address on time.

Visa Extension

Visa extension can be done at the Immigration Office (Ausländerbehörde) of the city where you live. In recent years, Germany has had more and more foreign residents. That's why it's better to make an appointment before your visit. The required documents are usually, but may not be limited to:

• Your passport
• Registration confirmation (Meldebestätigung)
• Proof of health insurance
• University enrollment certificate
• Passport photos
• Proof of financial means
• Visa extension form

Any other documents you need to submit will be specified by the local Immigration Office. So, check with them that everything is ready. A checklist of all required documents can be found on the Immigration Office (Ausländerbehörde) website. You also need to pay about 100 euros for the residence permit. One important thing is to always request a visa extension 6 months before it expires. Otherwise, you could run into unnecessary problems.

Just like registering for the "Meldebescheinigung," it's also difficult, sometimes even much more difficult, to make an appointment with the Immigration Office. This happens to other people too, so don't worry if you can't extend your visa on time. What we recommend is to book an online appointment as early as possible. In the meantime, the Immigration Office confirmation can serve as temporary proof as long as you stay in Germany. If you wish to leave Germany, then you'll need a "Fiktionsbescheinigung." We'll briefly explain in the next part how to proceed.

Fiktionsbescheinigan - Temporary Proof of Visa

The visa application processing time is usually 4 to 6 weeks. If you need to leave Germany during this period, you wouldn't be able to return to Germany if you still don't have a valid visa. In this case, you need to apply for a Fiktionsbescheinigung before leaving Germany.

It works the same way as for a visa. This certificate proves that you're legally residing in Germany and that you can travel freely outside the country and return. The expiration date is usually 3 months from the official issuance date. If you wish to apply for a Fiktionsbescheinigung, you need to submit all the necessary documents for the visa application. However, requirements may vary depending on local officials. So don't forget to check with the local registration office before starting the application process.
