How do I apply for leave myself?

In order not to receive a reminder due to a lack of re-registration, don't forget to apply for leave for the following semester before the end of the re-registration period. Generally, you need to fill out the form available on the university website and submit it to the Student Center.

Note that:

• Leave is not possible for the first semester, but only starting from the second semester.
• Leave is normally approved for one semester and must not exceed 4 semesters.
• You can choose to pay the semester fees or not. In case you'd like your contribution to be refunded, the benefits associated with the semester ticket will no longer be granted to you during your leave.
• The application must be accompanied by all documents mentioned in the form.

What are the reasons for requesting leave?

To request a semester of leave, you need to have reasons that require an absence period of at least 6 weeks. Here are some common reasons for requesting leave at German universities:

• Academic reasons, such as an internship in Germany or abroad
• Personal reasons, such as illness
• Family or maternity leave
• Voluntary military service
• Other reasons, as long as you can justify them

Do I need to provide proof or documents?

Absolutely! Proof is essential for deciding whether your application will be accepted or not. The leave form must be accompanied by supporting documents. The following documents must be attached to your application:

• A medical certificate to prove your illness.
• The "Mutterpass" (maternity record) or your child's birth certificate.
• An internship contract or confirmation and agreement from your academic advisor or the responsible examination office.
• Precise information about the location, start and end dates of your stay abroad, the type of exchange program, and confirmation from the international office.
• Any document or proof related to other reasons.

Does leave affect my visa?

Your leave won't be counted as a semester spent at your university, which means this semester won't be part of the regular study period (Regelstudienzeit). As a result, it won't affect your visa extension.

However, if you take a leave of more than 6 months to go abroad, don't forget to inform the Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners' Registration Office). In that case, you'll need another supporting document provided by the Ausländerbehörde to be able to return to Germany without any problems.
