How to fill in the German visa application form

Many students struggle to fill out the German student visa application form. That's why this article focuses on this essential but confusing step by providing a detailed guide. Read it carefully to understand everything!

Downloading the German Visa Application Form

Note: Although it states here that we cannot use glue to attach the photo, there are still countries that require students to attach the photo first. You should bring passport photos and glue with you, just in case. The photo must be in 35x45 mm format.

Applicant Information

Be careful when entering your first name and last name - they must match your identity documents (e.g., passport).

Note: "Civil union" is a registered partnership between a couple living together that has different legal obligations and benefits arising from marriage

Information on the Applicant's Spouse / Registered Partner

Fill in your spouse's or partner's details as requested.

Information on the Applicant's Children

Fill in your children's details, including those who are 18 years or older.

Information on the Applicant's Parents

ONLY If You've Been to Germany Before

If you've been to Germany before, you're required to provide details of your last five stays in Germany; otherwise, check the NO box.

Do You Intend to Retain Your Permanent Residence Outside the Federal Republic of Germany?

Yes, since you want to keep your permanent residence in your home country, enter your personal address.

Will Any Family Member Intend to Accompany You?

Note: There are 2 options where you need to check "yes": If your family members will accompany you throughout your entire studies in Germany. If your family will accompany you during the first weeks / first months in Germany.

Purpose of Stay in the Federal Republic of Germany

Depending on your purpose, check the appropriate option here. Note:

1. If you'll first take language courses and then study at a German university, you must choose "Other" and write "Sprachkurs + Studium".
2. If you're coming to Germany to work, choose "Employment" and fill out the employment form.
3. Additionally, you'll also see the following options. If you intend to stay in Germany for 12 months and apply for a visa covering the entire duration, check this box (the very last one). But for bachelor's and master's students, your studies last at least 18 months, do NOT check this box.

References in the Federal Republic of Germany

If you don't have personal references in Germany, enter your university's contact details. If you do, enter the details of your references in Germany.

Occupation Trained and, If Different, Your Current Occupation

Enter the details of the occupation you were trained in, and if it's different, enter your current profession (e.g., engineer, doctor).

Intended Duration of Stay in Germany

Enter the details of the intended duration of your stay in Germany, i.e., the start date and end date.

Note: We suggest entering the start of your stay as "one week before the official start of the semester at your university" or "approximately one week before the start date indicated on your admission letter".

What Are Your Means of Subsistence?

You must show how you'll support yourself during your stay in Germany (a blocked account, a scholarship, or family support, for example) and also provide details of your health insurance. Check 'Yes' if you have health insurance.

Do You Suffer from Any of the Diseases Mentioned in the Footnote on Page 1 (Please Also Indicate If You Are Suspected of Suffering from Any of These Diseases)?

The footnote on page 1: smallpox, poliomyelitis, types of flu uncommon in humans (e.g., avian flu, swine flu), acute pandemic flu, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), cholera, pneumonic plague, yellow fever, viral hemorrhagic fever (e.g., Ebola, Lassa, Marburg).

Information provided to applicants in accordance with Section 54 (2) 8 in conjunction with Section 53 of the Residence Act: A foreigner may be deported if they have provided false or incomplete information to obtain a German residence permit or Schengen visa. The applicant is required to provide all information to the best of their knowledge and belief. If they refuse to provide data or knowingly provide false or incomplete information, the visa application may be refused, or if a visa has already been issued, the applicant may be deported from Germany. By signing this document, the applicant confirms that before submitting their application, they were informed of the legal consequences of refusing to provide data or providing false or incomplete information during the visa application process.
