Profile Info

As one of the most popular study programs in Germany, Medicine can be found at almost every university. You will learn about human body anatomy, diagnosis, and treatment of illness. The study in Medicine is very complex and consists of both classroom and lab-based courses to give you both academic and first-hand experience of healthcare practices. The first semesters will provide you with foundational knowledge in the following subject areas: Chemistry Biology Physics Biochemistry Physiology Anatomy Psychology

The study is divided into 2 phases: pre-clinical and clinical. You will have several laboratory internships and medical experiments in the first phase of your studies. In the following clinical part will focus more on the diagnoses and treatments of various types of diseases and illnesses. Here are some courses you may come across:
Ophthalmology Surgery Human Genetics Neurology Orthopedics

Besides medical courses, you will attend seminars in ethics and history of medicine, medical informatics, emergency medicine, health economics, or pharmacology.

Although the study in Human Medicine and Medicine is usually overlapped, Human Medicine focuses on human diseases while Medicine is a generic term in this field.

Depending on the curriculum of universities, the study in Medicine takes between 12 and 13 semesters. A three-month internship and an academic-year worth of medical practice are mandatory. You will work as an intern in internal medicine, surgery, or another department, where you will assist the physicians, attend conferences and meetings, and experience what it is like to work in a hospital.

Your studies in Medicine are concluded with 2 state exams. After completing the first state examination, you can prepare and write your doctoral thesis. At the end of the program, you will take the second state examination and a dissertation examination if necessary. Only after writing a dissertation will you receive the academic title of Doctor of Medicine (MD).
